RV’s PAUL SURRATT PRODUCES DEFINITIVE
KINGSTON TRIO DOCUMENTARY
In 2006 Research Video owner Paul Surratt fulfilled a lifelong ambition as a Producer of “The Kingston Trio Story: Wherever We May Go”, along with Executive Producers JoAnn Young & Jim Scalem. This comprehensive documentary about the seminal pop-folk singers aired on American Public Television during the August pledge drive and was released on DVD by Shout Factory adding an hour’s worth of supplemental bonus material. The program features eighteen rarely seen archival television performances of The Kingston Trio singing many of their best-loved songs. Additionally, candid interviews with group members Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and John Stewart and other key players, reveal the fascinating history of their remarkable group.
As a teenager living in South Carolina, Paul Surratt was swept up in the folk music phenomenon of the late 1950s / early 1960s. Groups like The Kingston Trio, The Limeliters and The Journeymen inspired Paul to form his own folk group called the Shilos along with George Wrigley, Joe Kelly and a young singer named Gram Parsons (later of Byrds / Flying Burrito Brothers fame). Paul eventually gave up on his career as a folk singer and wound up in the archival footage business. Paul never lost his enthusiasm for the Kingston Trio’s music, however and after twenty-or-so years in the business, he managed to track down the master tapes of nearly every Kingston Trio TV appearance known to exist! A Kingston Trio documentary project had been on Paul’s drawing board for many years, but in 2006 with all of the stars in line and the right production team assembled, the project was at last “a go”. The resulting effort is a one-of-a-kind documentary, packed full of great performance footage and fascinating music history, guaranteed to delight music lovers of all ages.
